Netflix Orders Documentary Series on Tennis Star Naomi Osaka

Naomi Osaka had a wild year last year and Netflix will bring her unbelievable journey to your screens. According to Variety, the streaming giant has ordered a documentary series about the tennis superstar, which will chronicle her year, beginning with “the U.S. Open in August last year, on tour as Osaka plays in each of this year’s Grand Slam tournaments, and prepares for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.”

“To be able to tell my story and let people in during this big year, working with a team that really understands me, has been a rewarding experience. It won’t look like a traditional sports documentary, and I’m so excited to share it with everyone,” Osaka said in a statement.

While the series will highlight the pressures of being a professional athlete and her hectic schedule, the documentary will also take Osaka to Japan and reveal her connection to the country and give perspective on her multi-cultural identity. Last year, Osaka became “the first Asian player to reach the number one singles ranking after winning her first Grand Slam, the US Open in 2018, and a second at the Australian Open in 2019,” Variety stated.

Netflix is yet to reveal a release date or title for the series.
