WarnerMedia Hires Former Hulu Exec Johannes Larcher as Head of HBO Max International

WarnerMedia has once again dipped into the pool of former Hulu executives. This time, the company has hired Johannes Larcher, former SVP of international at Hulu. According to Deadline, Larcher will be the head of international for HBO Max, beginning in August and will report to Gerhard Zeiler, chief revenue officer of WarnerMedia and president of WarnerMedia International Networks.

“His leadership skills, together with his strong direct-to-consumer and digital experience, international business foundations and tech expertise give him the perfect background to drive the growth of HBO Max beyond the United States,” Zeiler said in a statement.

Larcher’s first order of business will be leading the launch of HBO Max in Latin America next year. He is currently managing director of digital at Dubai-based media company MBC Group, where he oversees Shahid, the largest Arabic language streamer, Deadline reports.

He did a four-year stint as Hulu’s SVP of international between 2009 and 2013. Larcher also co-founded an Emmy-nominated virtual and augmented reality studio called SubVRsive.

Back in April, WarnerMedia announced Jason Kilar as their new CEO, effective May 1. Kilar came into the position with previous experience as the founding CEO of Hulu, a role he served from 2007 until 2013. He also held several leadership positions at Amazon from 1997 to 2006, including SVP of worldwide application software. After leaving Hulu, he went on to launch Vessel. However, the service didn’t scale and was sold to Verizon in 2016.

In June, WarnerMedia also appointed Richard Tom as the chief technology officer of the company. Tom reports to Kilar and is responsible for technology and operations organization, including technology strategy, platform development and operations as well as shared services across WarnerMedia.

Before coming to WarnerMedia, Tom served was an advisor and consultant for technology focused consumer and B2B companies, as well as venture-backed startups. Like Kilar, Tom did a stint at Hulu, previously serving as CTO and SVP of the streaming service, where he built and led the technical infrastructure that powered Hulu’s success with advertisers, content partners and customers.

Along with Kilar, Tom co-founded Vessel, an ad-supported, subscription-based, short-form video service that provided viewers early access to videos from top influencers, traditional television, major sports leagues and music publishers. Tom was also CTO of digital entertainment at Verizon previously.
