Disney Plus Popularity Continues to Climb, Mobile App Reaches 41 Million Downloads

Since its launch last year on Nov. 12, it’s been evident that Disney+ will be a force to reckoned with in the streaming wars. According to a new report by mobile analytics firm Sensor Tower, the Disney+ mobile app has garnered 40.9 million downloads on Apple’s app store and Google Play, mainly in the U.S. In the first 60 days after its launch, the app is also reported to have generated approximately $97.2 million in user spending on mobile.

Though these numbers are already monumental, they still don’t include interest in Disney+ stemming from smart TVs, gaming consoles or devices like Roku and Apple TV. According to CNET, customers seem to generally prefer to watch Disney+ programming on TVs. In comparison, only two-thirds to three-quarters report the same for Netflix and Hulu.

When Disney+ first launched, Apptopia reported the streaming service had been downloaded 3.2 million times to mobile devices and garnered 1.3 million hours of viewership in its first 24 hours. It immediately became the number one app in the Apple app store in both the U.S. and Canada, and in the Netherlands — where it had been available since last September as part of a free beta test — it was at number two.

Since then, several reports documenting the service’s numbers have come out, with Apptopia once again reporting that the platform was averaging almost a million subscribers per day. Other studies have also shown that consumers are either shifting from Netflix to Disney+ or are subscribing to both services.
