Disney Plus’ ‘The Mandalorian’ Earns 15 Emmy Nominations, Netflix Scores Nods With ‘The Crown’ and ‘Ozark’
Though the fate of the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards is still up in the air, the nomination ceremony went off without a hitch today. It was hosted by Leslie Jones, along with Laverne Cox, Josh Gad and Tatiana Maslany. Television Academy CEO Frank Scherma also made an appearance at the ceremony.
“The Mandalorian” made a big splash for Disney+ as the megahit series walked away with an astounding 15 nominations in its first bout as a contender. The series was nominated “for Best Drama, Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance, Production Design for Narrative Program (half-hour), Cinematography for Single Camera (half hour), Fantasy/sci-fi costumes, 3 single-camera Picture editing for a drama series, Prosthetic make-up, music composition, a guest actor in a drama series nod for Giancarlo Esposito, 2 sound-editing in a comedy/drama half hour series, outstanding special vfx, and stunt coordination for a drama series, limited series or movie,” according to Deadline.
Not to be outdone, Netflix also scored some major nods, with “The Crown,” “Ozark” and “Stranger Things” all competing in the Outstanding Drama Series category. “The Kominsky Method” and “Dead to Me” got nods for Outstanding Comedy Series, with Michael Douglas up for Lead Actor in a Comedy Series and Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini nominated for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. “Unbelievable” and “Unorthodox” are contending in the Limited Series category, while “Nailed It” is up for Outstanding Competition Program. “Glow’s” Betty Gilpin is also up for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.
Apple TV+ also has some strong competitors in the pool with “The Morning Show.” The series’ Steve Carell and Jennifer Aniston are up for Outstanding Lead Actor and Actress in a Drama Series, while Billy Crudup and Mark Duplass are both up for Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.
Hulu made out with several nods of their own as “The Handmaid’s Tale” also made it into the Outstanding Drama Series category, and “What We Do in the Shadows” is competing in the Outstanding Comedy Series. Ramy Youssef, who helms the self-titled “Ramy,” was also nominated for Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series, and Mahershala Ali is up for Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. “Little Fires Everywhere” and “Mrs. America” are both running for Outstanding Limited Series and Kerry Washington is nominated for Outstanding Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for her role as Mia Warren in “Little Fires.”
Amazon Prime Video snagged some noms for “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” Rachel Brosnahan is up for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, Sterling K. Brown and Tony Shalhoub are both up for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, and Alex Borstein and Marin Hinkle are both contending for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. The show is also competing in the Outstanding Comedy Series category.
The award show is still slated to take place on Sept. 20 and will be hosted and produced by Jimmy Kimmel. Plans of an in-person as well as virtual ceremony are in place, reports Deadline, though ultimately it depends on what the stipulations are surrounding COVID-19.
