Responding to the COVID-19 crisis, Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s “Fleabag,” the stage version, streamed April 10 on Amazon Prime Video. The original plan was a 48-hour rental marathon to raise money for U.S. charities.
But so successful was the enterprise — already more than $1 million has been raised — that the show must go on — at least through May 31, reports IndieWire.
“Fleabag” was originally written as a one-woman play by Waller-Bridge, which she debuted at the Edinburgh Festival seven years ago, before touring. It formed the basis for her hit BBC TV series, which was picked up by Amazon Prime Video in 2016 and won six Emmys in 2019.
The $1 million raised to date was thanks to contributions from 96 countries. The Fleabag Support Fund continues to raise donations via its GoFundMe, distributing grants of £2,500 ($3,100) to theater, comedy and cabaret performers.
“Fleabag” also streams on the SoHo Theatre’s On Demand site in the UK and Ireland, raising funds for UK charities.
While the series is popular, Waller-Bridge says there will be no third season. However, the actress’ presence on Amazon is assured. She signed a $20 million overall deal with the streamer to produce content.
Waller-Bridge starred in the British comedy-drama “Crashing” and was also showrunner-executive producer for the first season of “Killing Eve” in Aril 2018.
