About 60 Minutes
In the season 54 premiere of 60 Minutes, Fire Department of New York Commissioner Dan Nigro shares his account of what happened on September 11, 2001. 60 Minutes also spoke with other firefighters and first responders who put their lives on the line. FDNY Chief of Department Peter Ganci lost his life on 9/11, and today, two of his sons, Peter and Chris, are a part of the FDNY and were interviewed for the season premiere episode. Throughout the hour, stories of heroism are shared alongside archival footage of the tragic day.
“A lot of bravery was displayed that day… followed by a lot of sadness,” says Nigro. “I think for everyone that was there that day, it just stays with them, the sadness. We have plenty of good days, plenty to be thankful for, those of us who survived, but it’s a day that’ll never leave, never leave you.”
