NBCU’s Streaming Service Called ‘Peacock’, with ‘Saved By The Bell’, ‘Punky Brewster’, and ‘Battlestar Galactica’ Reboots Joining Service

NBC Universal unveiled this morning that their new streaming service will be called Peacock. The service, which previously announced it will debut in April 2020, will be the exclusive home for ‘The Office’ (January 2021) and now ‘Parks and Recreation’ (October 2020) — which is currently available across Prime Video, Hulu, and Netflix.

The streaming service announced an original slate which includes a reboot of Saved By The Bell, which will see the return of stars Mario Lopez and Elizabeth Berkley. Additionally, Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail will reboot Battlestar Galactica for service, while Soleil Moon Frye will return in an updated version of Punky Brewster.

Other series coming to Peacock are Rutherford Falls with Ed Helms, Dr. Death with Jamie Dornan, Alec Baldwin, and Christian Slater, and behind-the-scenes docuseries about Saturday Night Live*.

When it launches in April 2020, the service will bring over 15,000 hours of content, which will include news, entertainment, sports, late-night, and reality from the various properties around the company. The service will also feature blockbusters and critically-acclaimed films from Universal Pictures, Focus Features, DreamWorks Animation, Illumination and content acquired from Hollywood’s biggest studios.

While details around pricing wasn’t disclosed, the service is expected to be free to anyone who subscribes to a pay TV service, including vMVPDs. However, similar to Hulu though, the service will offer an ad-free tier for an additional fee — which has been previously reported at $10+.

NBC hopes by making it free, it can quickly amass a 20-30 million subscriber base similar to that of Netflix and Hulu. They expect to be able to accrue $5 in ad-revenue per month per subscriber by airing 3-5 minutes of ads per hour. The company’s longtime cable chief, Bonnie Hammer, will shift to oversee the OTT service, as well as the digital unit for NBCUniversal.
