Netflix released the debut trailer for “Extraction” today, per Deadline.
The action film, which debuts April 24, stars a muscled Chris Hemsworth as a mercenary hired by an imprisoned crime boss to rescue his kidnapped young son. It’s a tough mission in a nasty world of drug trafficking and global arms dealing.
Hemsworth is also a producer on the movie, which is directed by Sam Hargrave (fight and stunt coordinator for “Captain America: Civil War”). Joe Russo, who directed Marvel’s “Avengers: Endgame” with his brother, Antony Russo, wrote the script.
Netflix has scored with some high-profile action movies with major Hollywood stars.
“6 Underground,” starring Ryan Reynolds, was viewed by 83 million households in its first few weeks. It kicked off mid-December. Directed by Michael Bay, the movie is about a vigilante squad that goes after terrorists that governments won’t pursue. Bay’s explosive drama reportedly cost $150 million to make.
Other A-listers to scare up numbers for Netflix include Ben Affleck in “Triple Frontier” in 2019, which the streamer said drew 52 million its first month. It also revealed viewership numbers for “The Highwaymen,” which starred Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson as Texas Rangers tracking down Bonnie and Clyde. The 1930s drama racked up 40 million member households in its first month.
As part of Netflix’s new strategy, “The Highwaymen” had a limited theatrical release before streaming in late March 2019.
Similarly, Oscar-winner Sandra Bullock headlined the hyper-tense post-apocalyptic “Bird Box” in late 2018 for the streamer. Bullock plays a woman trying to protect herself and two children from malevolent forces hoping to drive them mad.
Nielsen reported an estimated 26 million viewers watched “Bird Box” in its first week. Netflix reported 80 million households viewed it in the month.
