Netflix’s ‘The Crown’ Season 5 to Premiere in 2022 Following Two-Year Hiatus

Though the fourth season of “The Crown” is slated to premiere later this year, fans will have to savor each episode as the show won’t be coming back to Netflix until 2022. According to Deadline, filming of the hit series won’t resume until next June, meaning the show won’t have any new episodes for the entire year of 2021. If season five were to premiere next year, production would have to be underway currently.

According to Deadline, a two-year break is a staple for the show, and not caused by the advent of COVID-19. The same happened when Claire Foy stepped down as Queen Elizabeth to give way to Olivia Colman. Now, Imelda Stanton steps up to the role, with Lesley Manville playing Princess Margaret.

Though a premiere date for season four is yet to be announced, the show wrapped filming just before COVID-19 shut productions down. Season four will go through 1990 when Margaret Thatcher was ousted as Prime Minister. Gillian Anderson will star as Thatcher and the series also follows Princess Diana (played by Emma Corrin) and Prince Charles’ (Josh O’Connor) relationship. The pair got married in 1981.

Back in January, Netflix announced that Imelda Staunton will pick up as Queen Elizabeth II in what they presumed would be the fifth and final season.

But earlier this month, the streamer announced a sixth season for the popular royal drama and confirmed it will be the official final season.

Though the show may not have taken UK audiences by storm, it’s gotten some critical acclaim in the U.S. This awards season, Olivia Colman took home the trophy for best actress in a TV series (drama) for her portrayal of the Queen at the Golden Globes, and the entire show won Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series at the SAG Awards.
