Adam Sandler & Jennifer Aniston’s Netflix Film ‘Murder Mystery’ Streamed By Over 30 Million Households in First Three Days

Jason Gurwin

According to Netflix, their recently released comedy ‘Murder Mystery’, which stars Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler was streamed by 30.9 million accounts in their first three days. This was the biggest opening weekend ever for Netflix, which saw 13.4 million of those accounts in US & Canada, with 17.5 million of them worldwide.

Netflix considers an account a viewer “once a view surpasses 70 percent of total running time including credits.” In comparison, the Netflix film ‘Birdbox’, starring Sandra Bullock was streamed by over 45 million accounts in its first 7 day and 80 million in its first month. Kevin Costner/Woody Harrelson’s The Highwayman and Ben Affleck’s film Triple Frontier reaching 40 million and 52 million member households in their first month respectively.

So while it’s difficult to compare to traditional movie sales, the top movie last weekend, The Secret Life of Pets 2, grossed $50.7 million in its first weekend and sold over 5 million tickets. In comparison to television, the NBA Finals on ABC saw an average of 14.3 million viewers per game.

It’s clear that viewership was massive and that Netflix has the opportunity to drive viewers to films that wouldn’t be traditional blockbuster movies. Given that Netflix self-reports its view metrics and has been tight lipped about them in the past, it will be interesting to compare this to future films on the service going forward.
