Amazon Begins Production on Reboot of ‘A League of Their Own’

The baseball film that put Madonna, Geena Davis and Rosie O’Donnell in the lineup is now an Amazon Prime Video comedy.

The reboot of Penny Marshall’s film “A League of Their Own” is in the pilot stage, reports The Hollywood Reporter. The story takes place in 1943, during World War II, and follows the all-girls Rockford Peaches season to season.

The potential series stars D’Arcy Carden (“The Good Place”), Kelly McCormack (“Killjoys,” “A Simple Favor”) and Priscilla Delgado (“Julietta”). It is produced by Sony Pictures TV.

Amazon promises to bring a “fresh approach” to the 1992 movie, written and executive produced by Abbi Jacobson (“Broad City,” “The Lego Ninjago Movie”) and Will Graham (“Mozart in the Jungle.”) In addition to her creative credits, Jacobson will also play a catcher in the series, married to a soldier who is fighting in the war.

The hourlong comedy, now shooting in Southern California, introduces new characters navigating a changing America. The real-life All-American Girls Professional Baseball League was created when the war threatened to shut down Major League Baseball.

In 2012, the Library of Congress selected the movie for preservation in the U.S. National Film Registry for its portrayal of women during World War II, noting it combined humor with feminism.
