Apple TV Plus Breaks Through With First SAG Award Win Though Amazon Leads With Three Wins

The Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards took place last night and the event was as star-studded as ever. While Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt’s reunion took center stage, it was the actress’ big win in the Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series category for her role as Alex Levy in Apple TV+’s “The Morning Show” that made headlines. Aniston’s win was only the second industry award for the new streaming service as they previously won at the Critics Choice Awards, Engadget reports.

Netflix also swept up some awards last night, with “Marriage Story’s” Laura Dern walking away with the Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role award and “The Crown” winning Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.

Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” came away with a win in the Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series category, with Tony Shalhoub winning Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series for his role as Abe Weissman. Phoebe Waller-Bridge brought it home for “Fleabag” as she walked away as the Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series winner.

Though Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman” didn’t come away with any awards last night, there is still hope as the film is still a top contender for the Academy Awards, along with “Marriage Story.” Both films are nominated in the prestigious Best Picture category for this year’s ceremony. Martin Scorsese is up for Best Director for “The Irishman,” while Noah Baumbach was nominated for Best Original Screenplay for “Marriage Story.”

Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver were both nominated for Best Actress and Best Actor, while Laura Dern snagged a nomination for Best Supporting Actress. For “The Irishman,” Al Pacino and Joe Pesci are both contending for the Best Supporting Actor award.

Netflix got additional nods with Anthony Hopkins for an Actor in a Supporting Role in “The Two Popes,” “American Factory” (produced by former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama’s production company) and “The Edge of Democracy” in the Documentary Feature category and “I Lost My Body” and “Klaus” in the Animated Feature Film category.
