Netflix Launches New Parental Controls, Allows for More Choice and Control of Kids’ Profiles

Stephanie Sengwe

Netflix announced on Tuesday that they updated the parental controls on their platform. The streaming giant has made changes that give parents more control over the content their kids are watching. While they are continuing to add a wide array of content, Netflix is now allowing parents to pin protect individual profiles to prevent kids from using them.

Netflix is also giving parents the choice to filter out titles that aren’t appropriate for their children’s age. The company says they’ve built the filters using country ratings so they are more intuitive. In addition, parents can now remove individual series or films by title, meaning blocked titles won’t show up at all on that profile.

The streamer is also making life easier for parents by aggregating settings in one place. Parents can make changes to each profile’s setting using the “Profile and Parental Controls” hub within account settings. Parents can also turn off auto play on kids’ profiles as well as track all shows their kids have been watching within the profile created for them.

The updates come as families are spending more time together at home due to the coronavirus. The company has been doing their part and lending a hand to those affected. Earlier this week, Deadline reported the streaming giant allocated $1 million to the Producers Guild of India Relief Fund, which will aid in “emergency short term relief to thousands of daily wage earners in the Indian creative community who have been directly impacted by the closure of productions.”

In March, the company became the first to adjust to standard definition (SD) viewing in the EU in order to preserve internet bandwidth as more and more people began to work from home.
