Hulu Now Has 25 Million Subscribers. How Does That Compare to Netflix and Amazon Prime Video?

Hulu announced today that they ended 2018 with more than 25 million total subscribers across their subscription on demand (SVOD) and live TV plans. The company saw a 48% increase in subscribers over the last year.

Hulu saw huge growth over the holidays from their $0.99 a month promotion, which gave new subscribers a year of the service at a heavily discounted price. The company’s Live TV product has taken advantage of a pull back in promotion from DIRECTV NOW. Hulu CEO shared that it grew 10x of DIRECTV Now in the 3rd Quarter.

Hulu certainly had a great 2018, but it is still behind Netflix and Amazon.

How Does This Compare to Netflix and Amazon Prime Video?

In May, Amazon announced that they had 100 million Prime subscribers, but according to a report by Reuters in March about 26 million U.S. customers stream videos on Prime Video.

In October, Netflix announced that they had reached 130 million paid subscribers including 57 million U.S. streamers.

What was Hulu’s Viewership in 2018?

In terms of viewership, the average time spent on Hulu per subscriber increased 20% in 2018. Much of that came from binge viewing — Looking at the top 100 shows on Hulu, over half of all viewing sessions consist of 3 or more episodes of the same series.

Castle Rock was Hulu’s highest performing new original of 2018) and was the second-highest performing Hulu Original overall this year, behind only The Handmaid’s Tale — which saw a 76% increase in total consumption compared to Season 1.
