Netflix Expands Chinese Content with Six New Chinese-Language Licensed Titles

Netflix is growing its Chinese-language content with six new licensed titles which will arrive on the platform in the second half of 2019. While Netflix is not allowed to operate in China, the service has noticed that international audiences, viewers in Chinese-speaking parts of Asia, and overseas Chinese, all have an interest in the content.

Netflix’s first Chinese-language original series are expected to launch over the next few months, including Nowhere Man, Triad Princess, and The Ghost Bride. The six upcoming Chinese-language licensed series and films lean heavily on productions from Taiwan and Hong Kong. They include an expansion of A Thousand Goodnights from Taiwan’s Sanlih TV; the pickup of Taiwanese art house thriller Cities of Last Things; Sexy Central a female-led drama from Hong Kong’s China 3D Digital; Pili Fantasy: War of Dragons a popular glove puppetry show from Taiwan that has run since 1988; Mayday Life, a fact-based movie that follows Taiwanese mega-band Mayday on its “Life Tour”; and Til Death Do Us Part licensed from MirrorFiction.

It seems catering to different cultural demographics is slowly but surely becoming a trend, as Pluto TV announced the launch of Pluto TV Latino, a new category on the platform featuring 11 linear Spanish and Portuguese-language channels, earlier this month.

Across its 11 channels, Pluto TV Latino is offering movies, comedy, music, true crime, reality, sports and telenovelas. Three movie-themed channels offer blockbuster and native Spanish-language films. Genre-specific channels from MTV, Comedy Central, Telemundo, Combate World and Lucha Libre feature library collections, music specials, comedies, crime series, telenovelas and more. Programming is in native Spanish-speaking as well as dubbed versions.

Over the past year, Netflix has acquired Chinese-language content including films and TV series including Dear Ex, Green Door Us and Them, just to name a few.
