Netflix Remains Dominant as Households Add Mix of Streaming Services

It’s no secret that streaming services – SVODs and AVODs — have skyrocketed in viewership since the pandemic began.

What’s interesting, even in a tight economy, is viewer preference. Households often purchase several streaming services, but Netflix remains the dominant player in a growing field.

Reelgood charted the most popular streaming combos for 2 million-plus users in the U.S. as of August 15. Here are the takeaways:

Given Netflix’s dominance, users are sticking with the king. When they do add rivals, they tend to be Amazon Prime Video, Hulu and Disney+, at 65 percent, 51 percent and 50 percent, respectively.

Whereas, Hulu subscribers also subscribe to the big three, but in greater numbers: Netflix (86 percent), Prime Video (80 percent) and Disney+ (67 percent). Disney+ subscribers echo approximate rates for its rivals, as well.

On the low end, Hulu subscribers add HBO Max at much smaller rates: 20 percent.

Peacock users add Netflix (91 percent), Prime Video (93 percent) and Hulu (87 percent).

Most Netflix users are not supplementing with HBO Max (13 percent) or Peacock Premium (3 percent), though both services are in their early stages. However, almost one-fifth of HBO Max users subscribe to Peacock Premium.

These stats are mirrored by Apple TV+ — 91 percent of its subscribers are also subscribed to Netflix and Prime Video. Conversely, only 9 percent have added Peacock Prime and 31 percent added HBO Max.
