NFL Sunday Ticket War Heating Up As Amazon And Disney Battle For Broadcast Rights

NFL Sunday Ticket, which has always only been available on DIRECTV, is in the process of finding a new home as the league begins negotiating its next wave of major TV deals. According to Pro Football Talk, NFL Sunday Ticket, which offers out-of-market games to fans around the country, could see the streaming right to either Amazon or Disney, with the former already working with the NFL by streaming Thursday Night Football, and the latter, presumably, hoping to increase offerings on its year-old streaming service, ESPN+.

The reason for NFL Sunday Ticket’s availability comes from tensions between the NFL and AT&T, which purchased DIRECTV in 2014, and recently dropped NFL Network from Uverse and DIRECTV, while keeping NFLN in the DIRECTV lineup. With Amazon’s ability to, potentially, tailor commercials to viewers while watching a game, and Disney’s ESPN already having a relationship with the league from its Monday Night Football broadcasts, the two media giants could find themselves fighting for the rights to NFL Sunday Ticket.

According to the Pro Football Talk article, the NFL has also considered both Google and Netflix for a streaming deal as well, with discussions with both believed to be “on and off.”
