Sling TV Reaches 2.47 Million Subscribers in 2nd Quarter 2019, Still is Largest Live TV Streaming Service

The company has added only ~250,000 subscribers since the end of 2017

Dish Network announced their 2019 2nd Quarter results today, and shared that Sling TV added just 48,000 net subscribers this quarter. The Live TV Streaming Service now has 2.472 million subscribers, up from 2.424 million at the end of the first quarter.

This is the fifth consecutive quarter of under 2% growth from the Live TV Streaming Service, which has added just 251,000 subscribers since the end of 2017. Their parent Dish has been in a a months long carriage dispute with HBO and a more recent one with Meredith for local affiliates. Earlier this year, the company settled a dispute with Univision, but the channels only returned to Dish satellite customers.

Last week, both Dish and Sling TV saw Fox Sports RSNs and YES Network removed from their service. If the dispute continues, it will likely impact their results going into the third quarter. Without contracts, the bigger impact will likely be with Sling TV, since the channels were a core part of their Sling Blue plan.

Sling TV is still the largest vMVPD, ahead of Hulu Live TV, who announced in September that they had reached 1 million subscribers, but some have speculated that they have surpassed 2 million subscribers. They continue to build their lead on DIRECTV NOW who has lost 518,000 in the last three quarters, leaving the service with just 1.34 million subscribers. YouTube TV has never disclosed subscribers, but reports place them at 1 million, PlayStation Vue at 800,000, and fuboTV at 300,000.

The company has been actively trying to recruit customers leaving services due to rising prices. Besides adding Discovery channels in December, Sling TV has been discounting the service to just $15 a month (40%) for new subscribers since mid-March. While some of this is reflected in the current user numbers, the promotion will continue to see the impact over the rest of the year.
