Amazon Joins ‘Crown’ Producers to Adapt Chief Inspector Gamache Novels

Fern Siegel

The company that produced “The Crown” for Netflix is about to finalize a series deal with Amazon Prime Video.

The project is an adaptation of Louise Penny’s popular Chief Inspector Gamache novels. The series will carry the title “Three Pines,” reports Deadline.

Three Pines is the Quebec village where French-speaking Chief Inspector Gamache works. One of his more endearing traits is speaking English with a British accent, given his years at Cambridge. The show will be filmed in Canada.

Emilia di Girolamo (“The Tunnel”) will write the series. Sam Donovan (“The Crown”) will direct four episodes and serve as lead director.

Agatha Award-winning author Penny has published 14 books in the Gamache canon. They are of the cozy mystery variety. The first novel in the series, “Still Life,” was adapted into a CBC TV (Canada) movie, starring English actor Nathaniel Parker (“The Inspector Lynley Mysteries”) as the detective.

All the Gamache novels have won major crime-writing awards and many have topped The New York Times Best Seller list.

Earlier this year, Amazon Studios announced an alliance with Nicole Kidman’s production company for an original film “My Lovely Wife.” Blossom Films previously struck a first-look deal with Amazon Prime.

The project is based on Samantha Downing’s bestselling book, a twisted suburban crime thriller about husband-wife serial killers. The murder spree spices up their marriage — until a victim is found, which creates unforeseen consequences for the family.

“My Lovely Wife” has been published in 23 countries and is a Best First Novel nominee for the 2020 Edgar Award.
