Disney Plus Debuts New Trailer for ‘The One and Only Ivan,’ Available August 14

Disney+ dropped a new trailer for “The One and Only Ivan.” The movie, which is based on book by Katherine Applegate of the same name, will be available on the streaming service beginning August 14.

The film follows Ivan, a 400-pound silverback gorilla who shares a communal habitat in a suburban shopping mall with Stella the elephant, Bob the dog, and various other animals. Ivan has few memories of the jungle where he was captured, but when a baby elephant named Ruby arrives, it touches something deep within him. Ruby is recently separated from her family in the wild, which causes Ivan to question his life, where he comes from and where he ultimately wants to be.

“The One and Only Ivan” stars Sam Rockwell as the voice of Ivan; Angelina Jolie as Stella; Danny DeVito as Bob the dog; Helen Mirren as the voice of Snickers the poodle; Brooklynn Prince as the voice of Ruby; among a host of other Hollywood stars.

The film was directed by Thea Sharrock from a screenplay written by Mike White and is produced by the late Allison Shearmur, Angelina Jolie and Brigham Taylor. Sue Baden-Powell and Sharrock serve as executive producers.

“The One and Only Ivan” comes at the heels of the blockbuster premiere of “Hamilton” on Disney+. The film, which debuted on July 3, catalyzed a surge in app downloads over the weekend. According to Apptopia, app downloads of the streaming service in the U.S. were up 72.4 percent higher “than the average of the four weekends in June 2020 over comparable time periods (Friday through Sunday),” Variety reported.

Over the course of the weekend, the Disney+ app was downloaded 513,323 times globally, including 266,084 times in the U.S., Apptopia revealed. Since the service is available through pre-existing apps in India and in Japan, those numbers were not included in the global sum. Also not factored in were numbers from people who may have signed up for the service online and through smart TVs and didn’t download the app.
