An untitled original series, set in the Gotham City Police Department, in the world of the upcoming “The Batman” film, will stream on HBO Max.
Matt Reeves (“War for the Planet of the Apes”) will direct, write and produce “The Batman,” coming in 2021, part of the DC Extended Universe.
“Boardwalk Empire” creator Terence Winter will write the TV show; both Winter and Reeves will executive produce the series.
“This is an amazing opportunity, not only to expand the vision of the world I am creating in the film, but to explore it in the kind of depth and detail that only a long-form format can afford,” Reeves stated.
Kevin Reilly, Chief Content Officer of HBO Max and president of TNT, TBS and truTV, added: “This is Batman as most audiences have never seen before, and we know fans will want to spend more time in this new world inspired by the film.”
“The Batman” film stars Robert Pattinson, Zoe Kravitz, Paul Dano, Colin Farrell, John Turturro, Jeffrey Wright, Peter Sarsgaard and Andy Serkis.
There are other DC projects in the works at HBO Max. J.J. Abrams and his bad Robot Productions are developing a series based on “Justice League Dark” characters, the more supernatural members of the DC Universe.
In addition to producing the Gotham City PD show, Reeves’ 6th & Idaho is also producing the Netflix series “Away” and Amazon’s “Tales From the Loop.”
