Today is an exciting day for Comcast’s Xfinity X1 and Flex customers as they get an early peek at the company’s new streaming service Peacock. The service launches nationally on July 15 and comes with a free tier featuring more than 7,500 hours of movies and shows. The service will also offer Peacock Premium, which will be available for $4.99 per month, as well as an ad-free tier for $9.99. However, Comcast’s Xfinity X1 and Flex customers are previewing the service at no additional cost.
With NBCUniversal as their parent company, Peacock is sure to offer a high-quality originals as well as classic library content. However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, many productions have had to shut down, consequently delaying premieres for some shows. (The pandemic also affected Peacock’s plans to feature live sports events such the Tokyo Olympics.) Matt Strauss, chairman of Peacock, said that the timing of originals is “tricky to answer because it’s unclear when things are going back to normal.”
Nonetheless, Strauss expects some originals to be available at the July 15 national launch and, more hopefully, toward the end of 2020, including “Brave New World,” “Psych 2: Lassie Come Home,” and reboots of “Punky Brewster” and “Saved By The Bell.” NBCU intends on adding dozens of series and original films, including “The Capture,” “Angelyne” and more in 2021.
One of the most highly anticipated shows coming to the platform is “The Office,” which will leave Netflix in January 2021 after becoming the most watched show on the platform.
