For the second time in three years, the Detroit Tigers have the number one pick for this year’s draft. The team is expected to go with Spencer Torkelson, Arizona State University’s first baseman, CBS Sports reports. The next four players are expected to be some sort of combination of Vanderbilt’s Austin Martin, Texas A&M’s southpaw Asa Lacy, Georgia right-hander Emerson Hancock and Minnesota right-hander Max Meyer. The Baltimore Orioles, Miami Marlins, Kansas City Royals and Toronto Blue Jays round out the top five teams with picks in the first round.
Though there are some strong college picks this year, there’s a trio of high school pitchers who have the potential to be first-round talents. Oregon’s Mick Abel, Texas’ Jared Kelley and Pennsylvania’s Nick Bitsko are all expected to be picked early enough in the draft that they will sign, according to the MLB.
