Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Formula 1 schedule has completely changed. The car racing league had originally planned a season with 22 races lined up, but that has been trimmed down to eight events in Europe, beginning with the Austrian Grand Prix, as the league returns. Fans can watch the race on ESPN on Sunday at 8 a.m. ET.

Multiple teams will be looking to solidify their positions on the leaderboard when the league returns. For one, Daniel Ricciardo and Esteban Ocon will helm Renault once again in the hopes of getting the team back above McLaren, after having slipped into the fifth position last season, Eurosport reports.
Max Verstappen and Red Bull are expected to also fire up the competition as “results in testing would indicate their car certainly has the speed, but may not be the most reliable,” according to Eurosport. Along with Alexander Albon, Verstappen is expected to be on a formidable enough team to beat out Ferrari and cause serious problems for champions Mercedes.
Lewis Hamilton comes into the race as the season favorite and will gun for a record-equalling seventh drivers’ title. However, Hamilton has been quite vocal about bigger causes. The F1 star has spoken out against the racial injustices around the world and has participated in Black Lives Matter protests in Hyde Park, London.
“I’m racing for all of you out there who may feel that you don’t have a voice,” said Hamilton in reference to the recent anti-racism protests,” he stated. “In the world, in the society that we live in, I think making it as a young black kid from a council estate in Stevenage, making it to F1 through the tiniest window of opportunity — that’s a very, very important part of my journey and then staying there and continuing to deliver against adversity.”
