Hulu Lands ‘Conversations With Friends,’ Another Adaption From ‘Normal People’ Author Sally Rooney

Torrey Hart

Following the success of the series adaption of her novel “Normal People,” Hulu is sending an adaptation of author Sally Rooney’s “Conversations with Friends” straight to series, Variety reported Thursday.

The BBC reportedly committed to the 12-part, half-hour series in February.

“Normal People” director Lenny Abrahamson will also direct “Conversations with Friends,” while Alice Birch will be the lead writer, according to Deadline. Ed Guiney, Andrew Lowe, Emma Norton, Rose Garnett Tommy Bulfin and Rooney and Abrahamson will executive produce, while Catherine Magee is series producer.

“Sally Rooney perfectly and beautifully captures the complicated dynamics of relationships in her stories. After bringing that to life in ‘Normal People’ to an overwhelmingly positive response, we are honored to do the same with ‘Conversations With Friends.’ We are excited to continue our creative partnership with Sally, Element Pictures, Lenny and the BBC, which has been a dream collaboration,” said Beatrice Springborn, VP of content at Hulu.

“Conversations with Friends” was Rooney’s debut novel in 2017, and is described as “a sharply intelligent story set in Dublin about two college students Frances and Bobbi, and the strange, unexpected connection they forge with a married couple, Melissa and Nick.”

“Normal People,” also set in Ireland, debuted in the UK on April 26 and in the U.S. three days later.

On Thursday, it was also announced that stars Daisy Edgar-Jones and Paul Mescal will reunite for two new special episodes to be aired on Ireland’s RTÉ Friday, but it’s not yet clear if they will be available to international audiences.
