Jeff Bezos Says Viewers Watched ‘Double the Hours’ of Content on Amazon Prime Video

Amazon released their Q4 2019 earnings report today and announced that the time viewers spend watching Prime Video content is growing.

“Prime members watched double the hours of original movies and TV shows on Prime Video this quarter compared to last year, and Amazon Originals received a record 88 nominations and 26 wins at major awards shows,” said Jeff Bezos, Amazon founder and CEO.

Though Amazon has never officially released its audience numbers, their streaming service’s shows have continued to garner popularity. “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and “Fleabag” have both been nominated and snagged multiple trophies this awards season.

Earlier this month, the service scored a first-look deal with Brad Pitt’s Plan B production company as well as alliances with dynamic duo Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna, plus Steve McQueen. At present, Bernal and Luna are executive producing an untitled “Cortés and Moctezuma” project from Amazon Studios and Amblin Television. In addition to “Small Axe,” McQueen will also prep sci-fi thriller “Last Days” for the streamer.

Amazon also recently purchased the streaming business Sye, which gives the retail/video giant key technology to improve its live streaming experience, including the NFL’s “Thursday Night Football” and Premier League soccer.

The $37.2 million deal secures Sye’s big draw — providing “end-to-end latency of less than 3 seconds, improved sync, instant channel changes and improved quality of experience,” Fierce Video noted. It also delivers new immersive experiences, such as watching a Formula 1 driver on the main video feed, while viewing the driver’s CabCam on-screen in a PIP (picture in picture).
