Netflix Beefs Up Anime Roster, Adds Key Creators

Netflix has teamed with six Japanese creators to develop original anime shows.

The manga artists, writers and filmmakers are noted for their contributions to the genre. The creators are: CLAMP (“Cardcaptor Sakura”), Shin Kibayashi (“The Kindaichi Case Files”), Yasuo Ohtagaki (“Mobile Suit Gundam: Thunderbolt”), Otsuichi (“Goth”), Tow Ubukata (“Mardock Scramble”) and Mari Yamazaki (“Thermae Romae”).

The new deal expands Netflix’s investment in anime. The streamer partnered with production houses Anima, Sublimation and David Production in 2019 and Production I.G and bones in 2018.

Taiki Sakurai, Chief Producer, Anime at Netflix, stated: “These partnerships are part of our broader investment strategy to support Japanese anime — giving creators the ability to tell bold, innovative stories and giving them access to fans all around the world.”

Tow Ubukata added: “With this partnership, I am excited to start working on larger-than-life, space sci-fi shows that fans around the world will love!”

Netflix claims more than 167 million paid memberships in over 190 countries.

The ad-free streamer isn’t alone in its decision to bolster anime. Anime brand Crunchyroll is enhancing its lineup by adding eight new series that span the adventure-fantasy-romance-historical fiction genres.
