Netflix Drops Trailer for New Jake Johnson Animated Series ‘Hoops’

Stephanie Sengwe

Netflix today released the first-look trailer for their late-summer animated series “Hoops.” The show, which stars “New Girl’s” Jake Johnson will be coming to the streamer on Aug. 21.

From creator Ben Hoffman, the series follows “pathetic and shameless Coach Hopkins’ mission to turn around his awful squad in hopes of turning his own miserable life around and getting promoted up to the ‘big leagues,’” according to Entertainment Weekly. Johnson voices the hotheaded, foul-mouthed high school basketball coach.

In addition to Johnson, the series also stars Rob Riggle, Natasha Leggero, Ron Funches, Cleo King and A.D. Miles.

The trailer drops days after Netflix announced they nabbed international rights to stream “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run” in most countries outside the U.S. excluding China and possibly Canada.

In the U.S., “Sponge on the Run” will take the PVOD route in early 2021. Then it will stream on CBS All Access. (Paramount, the parent of CBS All Access, is the studio behind the movie.)

According to Variety, Netflix is “not beholden to the 2021 domestic debut before offering the film to its customers abroad.”

The streamer also revealed they reached nearly 193 million global subscribers, in their Q2 2020 earnings report, up 10 million from the nearly 183 million global subscribers they hit in Q1 2020.

The company also announced that Ted Sarandos was promoted to co-CEO of Netflix, along with Reed Hastings.
