Netflix Greenlights Pharrell Williams’ Gospel Series

Netflix has ordered “Voices of Fire,” an unscripted gospel series from Grammy winner Pharrell Williams, reports Variety.

Williams is partnering with his uncle, Bishop Ezekiel Williams, who lives in the Hampton Roads, Virginia, area, which includes Virginia Beach, the singer’s hometown.

“Voices of Fire” follows the bishop in his search to find a diverse set of voices for the choir. Singers of various ages and ethnicities will be included. The goal, per the streamer, is for Bishop Williams and his team to build “one of the world’s most inspiring gospel choirs.”

The show is expected to launch this year. “Voices of Fire” will join the roster of music shows at Netflix, including the hip-hop competition “Rhythm + Flow.”

Williams, who will executive produce the series though his media company I Am Other, also appeared as a judge on “The Voice” and “The X Factor.”

The news was first announced at the Essence Festival on Sunday, which went digital this year.

Kenya Barris (“Black-ish”) and singer Pharrell Williams are also in talks with Netflix to create a musical about Juneteenth, the holiday that celebrates the end of slavery in the U.S.
