Netflix Orders ‘Extraction 2,’ Propelled by Initial Success

Netflix is capitalizing on the success of “Extraction.” The streamer just signed Joe Russo to write “Extraction 2,” a second installment of the high-octane thriller.

“Extraction,” which debuted April 24, is projected to reach 90 million households in its first four weeks, according to Netflix. It was co-written by Russo and his brother Anthony. AGBO, their company, will coordinate the next production.

No world yet on the rest of the crew. Chris Hemsworth stars as the mercenary hired by a crime lord to rescue his kidnapped son, while Sam Hargrave directs. Both remain Russo’s choices for round two.

Russo told Deadline, which first reported the news: “We’re not committing yet to whether that story goes forward, or backward in time. We left a big loose ending that leaves question marks for the audience.”

He added: “There was always a simple drive to the story, a balletic execution of action where you take a damaged character who made an egregious mistake in the past and has a shot at redemption which might be fatal.”

The scriptwriters said the popularity of “Extraction” was also aided by the decision to shoot in India. “The cultural elements just supercharged the storytelling,” Russo added.
