People love Netflix originals. While critics may dismiss them, the movies and shows flowing from the Netflix firehose are proving to be surprisingly powerful in keeping subscribers hitched to the platform.
Market research firm Ampere Analysis created its “Critical Rating Score” to track the popularity of shows and movies. The score looks at user reviews as well as the company’s popularity score that reflects on web traffic, box office receipts, and volume of interest. According to their analysis, a quarter of Netflix Original titles released over the last five years are expected to remain popular over the long term. That number compares favorably to movies released theatrically from companies like Disney and WarnerMedia.
According to Ampere, “The streaming giant’s ability to create hit content – especially TV shows, which make up 79 percent of Netflix top placements – is an effective substitute for legacy franchises.”
“Netflix has joined media giants Disney and WarnerMedia in creating content that will last,” the report said. The Ampere analysis points to the popularity of Netflix titles like The Crown and Stranger Things as being on par with Disney and Warner’s tentpole franchises.
This success with the audience helps Netflix’s churn rate remain lower than the rest of the industry. According to data from Antenna, Netflix’s churn rate was 2.4% in Q1 2021. In comparison, the streaming industry average was nearly three times higher. Hulu, which relies primarily on broadcast content, had a churn rate twice that of Netflix during the same timeframe.
This suggests that not only do consumers like Netflix Originals, but they are going out of their way to keep the service in order to watch that content, regardless of what critics may say.
