Penelope Cruz Feature ‘Wasp Network’ Gets June 19 Premiere Date at Netflix

Another one’s in the bag for Netflix’s summer flicks. The streaming giant has set June 19 as the premiere date for the Penelope Cruz and Edgar Ramirez-led drama “Wasp Network.” Written and directed by Olivier Assayas, the film will also be available in Eastern Europe, Greece, Portugal, the Middle East and France.

“Wasp Network” is based on the real life story of the Cuban Five — intelligence officers who were arrested in Florida back in the ’90s and later convicted of espionage among other illicit activities.

The film chronicles René González played by Ramirez, “a Cuban pilot who leaves his wife and daughter behind to start a new life in Miami. After joining forces with a group of Cuban exiles in South Florida, known as the Wasp Network, he becomes part of a spy ring tasked with observing and infiltrating Cuban-American organizations against Fidel Castro,” according to Variety.

Netflix has been aggregating their summer lineup. Yesterday, the streamer released the first trailer for “Da 5 Bloods,” a drama from renowned director Spike Lee. The film, which debuts on the platform on June 12, follows four African American Vietnam vets as they return to Vietnam to find the remains of their squad leader, as well as search for gold.

“Da 5 Bloods” stars Chadwick Boseman, Delroy Lindo, Clarke Peters, Norm Lewis, Isiah Whitlock, Jr., Mélanie Thierry, Paul Walter Hauser, Jasper Pääkkönen, Johnny Trí Nguyễn, Van Veronica Ngo and Jean Reno.
