Philo User Numbers Climb 300 Percent Over The Past Year, Service Now at 750,000 Subscribers

Stephanie Sengwe

It seems Philo has had a great year. The sports-free streaming TV bundle has seen a 300 percent uptick over the course of the past year and is now boasting 750,000 subscribers. Launched in 2017, Philo’s incredible growth in the first half of 2020 is the fastest of any MVPD.

Unlike its competitors — YouTube TV, fuboTV and Sling TV, which have all had to hike up their prices — Philo has been able to maintain its $20/month price tag.

“As the proliferation of streaming services and the battle for the share of consumer dollars gets tougher, we have always believed that there is a strong demand for live television from beloved brands at an affordable price and Philo continues to be well positioned to deliver on this consumer need,” the company said in a statement.

In comparison, the largest, Hulu Live TV ($55) announced yesterday that they have 3.4 million subscribers. After losing 281,000 subscribers last quarter, Sling TV ($30), now has 2.3 million subscribers, while YouTube TV, was last reported at 2 million users.

With continuing declines to AT&T TV NOW ($55), Philo is now ahead of their 720,000 subscriber count, along with fuboTV ($60), who last reported 287,000 subscribers.

Though they’ve been around since 2017, the service recently announced they are available on Google Chromecast, meaning Philo TV users can watch their favorite programming by casting to any Chromecast or Chromecast-supported TV. This is the first of the streaming service’s “Philo Connect” plan, which “will help Philo users connect all of the devices they use to watch TV,” including iOS, Web, FireTV, and Roku, the company said.

The news came a week after the streamer announced they will now carry TV One’s inventory — series, movies and music — geared to a Black audience. Shows include “Unsung,” “Uncensored, “ATL Homicide” and “Fatal Attraction.” The channel is expected to be available on the Live TV Streaming Service in the coming weeks.

This is TV One’s first vMVPD distribution deal. Philo already carries A&E, Comedy Central, BET, HGTV, MTV and Nickelodeon, among other networks. Philo runs $20/month, after a 7-day free trial — with premium add-on channels available, including Epix and Starz.
