Report: Twitch to Produce Original, Interactive Reality TV Shows

Amazon-owned video-gaming site Twitch is eyeing the reality TV world. The site intends to produce new, unscripted series a few times a week, Bloomberg reports. They would include game and dating shows, sports and talk.

Citing an internal document, Bloomberg says Twitch budgets for $50,000-$250,000 a week on series, which translates into four to 10 hours of shows.

The platform is popular with gamers, but the plan is to broaden the audience, keep its current demo (male gamers 18-24) and add anyone in that age group that likes general entertainment. Original shows mean introducing new talent to the platform. Many comics and musicians unable to perform live because of the coronavirus pandemic have turned to Twitch.

Twitch’s personalities have always filed from home. That makes it more nimble during the pandemic production shutdowns, unlike other streaming services.

Twitch’s twist may be that it can kick up interactivity to high levels, marrying gaming to TV. In a request for pitches, it wrote: “We are seeking creative partners to help us set a new bar for multiplayer entertainment.” Its only caveat: no escape-room streams.

Streamlabs reports Twitch’s audience watch 1.2 billion hours in April. Users turn to Twitch to watch skilled gamers play popular games, such as Valorant, Fortnite and Call of Duty.
