Season 2 of High School Comedy ‘Mr. Iglesias’ Premieres on Netflix

Fern Siegel

The high school comedy “Mr. Iglesias” begins its second season on Netflix today.

The sitcom, starring comedian Gabriel Iglesias, known for his show “I’m Not Fat… I’m Fluffy,” is about a well-intentioned history teacher trying to help struggling students at his alma mater in California.

Iglesias utilizes humor to teach his students, who are talented but underperforming. It’s a traditional multi-camera sitcom performed in front of a life audience and harkens back, in spirit, to “Welcome Back, Kotter” and “Head of the Class.”

The comic uses his humor to find interesting, even quirky aspects of history. For instance, he points out that James Monroe, a founding father and author of the Monroe Doctrine, did not wear a powdered wig.

The first season had 10 episodes; the second was renewed for 12 episodes.

“Mr. Iglesias” co-stars Sherri Shepherd (“Less Than Perfect,” “The View”) as the principle of Woodrow Wilson High School and Jacob Vargas as a fellow teacher and Gabe’s best friend. Oscar Nuñez (“The Office”) is the assistant principal who often tangles with Inglesias.

Last January 2019, Iglesias starred in the Netflix stand-up special “One Show Fits All.” In 2016, he performed “I’m Sorry For What I Said When I Was Hungry” for the streamer.

Iglesias is also an executive producer, alongside the show’s creator Kevin Hench (“Last Man Standing”).
