The long awaited season 3 of Netflix’s original series Stranger Things finally made its way to our screens on July Fourth and it did so with a splash.
According to Netflix, the show has already broken records since its been on, with 40.7 million household accounts watching—more than any other film or series in its first four days. Netflix also stated that 18.2 million viewers have already finished the entire 8-episode season.
Netflix, which just started sharing viewing figures, stated that it counts a view when someone has watched at least 70% of an episode or film. The company, which has generally been tight-lipped about its numbers announced in January that Bird Box, the horror film starring Sandra Bullock, was watched by 80 million people over four weeks. Umbrella Academy, about a dysfunctional superhero family, was listed as having 45 million viewers within its first month—the most for a series in the first quarter of 2019.
Last month, the streaming service announced that Murder Mystery, starring Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler, was streamed by 30.9 million accounts in the first three days—the biggest opening weekend ever for Netflix.
With viewership so high, it will be interesting to see how another heavy hitter—Orange is the New Black—does when its final season premieres on July 26.
