BroadwayHD is Netflix for Broadway Shows to Bring Live Theater into Your Living Room

Theaters lovers across the globe rejoice as BroadwayHD plans to bring your favorite Broadway shows right to you. If you can’t plan that vacation to New York or London to get the full theatrical experience of musicals such as “Les Miserables” and “Oklahoma,” fret not because BroadwayHD will have those shows right at your fingertips.

The brainchild of husband and wife duo, as well as long term producers, Stewart F. Lane and Bonnie Comley, BroadwayHD is the first ever streaming service dedicated solely to live theater. The streaming service, which is available on streaming media players like Apple TV, Roku, Chromecast, Fire TV (using Amazon Channels), iOS and Android, costs $8.99/month or $99.99/year. BroadwayHD offers more than 300 shows and over 750 hours-worth of programming to watch on-demand.

The service offers performances both as live streams, as well as on-demand classics such as “42nd Street”, “Memphis” and “The King and I.” Currently running blockbuster shows, like “Hamilton” and “Dear Evan Hanson”, are still not available on BroadwayHD. They have recently added newer titles like “Southern Baptist Sissies,” “Miss Saigon” and “Indecent” to their catalog which has tripled since 2015.

Because the service is still so new, industry insiders are still debating whether or not having BroadwayHD is a friend or foe to the box office. On one hand, some argue that millennials are primarily consuming their media through streaming and if live theater doesn’t follow the pattern, it will be left behind. Supporters of BroadwayHD believe offering shows live and on-demand will help sell tickets for the shows when they go on tour.

Opponents, however, want everyone to stop trying to make fetch happen. Their argument is that if it ain’t broke then don’t fix it, people will continue to show up to Broadway and other theater shows for the sake of showmanship because nothing beats a live experience.

For the time being, if you want the Broadway experience from your couch, theatre lovers can indulge themselves in the meantime with a 7-day free trial of BroadwayHD to try it out.
