Disney Plus’ ‘Hamilton’ Smashes All July Viewing Records

Fern Siegel

First it marched into Broadway. Now, “Hamilton” has scored big July returns for Disney+.

7ParkData reports that 37 percent of its studied viewers watched the musical — far outpacing rival Netflix. The second-most-watched title in July was “Unsolved Mysteries,” Netflix’s true-crime series, which garnered a 13.7 percent response, reports Variety.

7Park calculates the number of unique users that tune into titles on a daily basis — a census-balanced panel in the range of 15,000-25,000 U.S. households watching via connected TV (either smart TVs or devices connecting TVs to the Internet, i.e. Roku).

Viewers have to watch at least two minutes to count toward share of viewership. Disney+’s “Hamilton” registered 160 minutes, hitting the highest score in the study, at 8.7 percent.

The next three most-watched titles were “The Old Guard” at 10.6 percent (Netflix), “Hanna” at 9/6 percent (Amazon Prime Video) and “Palm Springs” (Hulu) at 8.1 percent, respectively. (Netflix commanded six of the top 10 shows in the 7ParkData July study.)

The catch to “Hamilton,” the researchers report, is sheer volume. It captured the largest audience of any show in one month this year. 7Park tracked five SVODs —Disney+, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu and Apple TV+ — to reach that conclusion.

Disney+ doesn’t release numbers, but the streamer did concede the filmed musical brought in subscribers.
