‘Hamilton’ Proves to Be Big Hit for Disney Plus as App Downloads Were Up 72 Percent Over the Weekend

It looks like Disney made the right bet by premiering “Hamilton” 15 months earlier than originally planned because Disney+ had a stellar weekend. According to Apptopia, app downloads of the streaming service in the U.S. were up 72.4 percent higher “than the average of the four weekends in June 2020 over comparable time periods (Friday through Sunday),” Variety reported.

Over the course of the weekend, the Disney+ app was downloaded 513,323 times globally, including 266,084 times in the U.S., Apptopia revealed. Since the service is available through pre-existing apps in India and in Japan, those numbers were not included in the global sum. Also not factored in were numbers from people who may have signed up for the service online and through smart TVs and didn’t download the app.

“Hamilton” was originally slated to hit theaters in October 2021, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the film’s theatrical stint was completely axed as Disney announced it would debut on the streaming service 15 months earlier.

The show was written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, who also produced the show along with Jeffrey Seller and Thomas Kail, the director of the film. In addition to the 11 Tony Awards, the musical has also garnered a Grammy Award, Olivier Award and Pulitzer Prize.

The July 3 premiere of “Hamilton” came two weeks after Disney+ announced they would no longer be offering free trials for new subscribers. The service formerly offered a seven-day trial, which it quietly phased it out in June. When new subscribers navigate through the sign-up process now, they are prompted to immediately begin paying for the $6.99 per month service (which is heavily marketed as part of a $12.99 bundle with Hulu and ESPN+).
