Netflix’s ‘The Crown’ Snags a Hefty 7 Nominations for This Year’s BAFTA TV Awards

HBO’s “Chernobyl” may have swept the floor, amassing 14 nominations for this year’s BAFTA TV Awards, but Netflix continues to prove it’s a formidable force. The streamer’s hit British drama, “The Crown,” is the second most nominated show this year, garnering seven nods of its own.

“The Crown” is contending on some of the major categories. Actress Helena Bonham Carter is up for supporting actress for her portrayal of Princess Margaret in the series, while co-star Josh O’Connor is up for best actor for his portrayal of Prince Charles. The series is also competing for best drama series as well the photography and lighting: fiction, sound: fiction, special, visual and graphic effects and production design categories.

Also nominated are Netflix’s “Sex Education” and “Top Boy,” coming in with four nominations each. “Sex Education’s” Ncuti Gatwa is up for male performance in a comedy program, while writer Laurie Nunn is competing in the breakthrough talent category. Samantha Harley and Miri Katz are up for production design and Lauren Evans is up for scripted casting.

“Top Boy’s” Jasmine Jobson wraps up the acting categories as she is nominated for supporting actress, along with Bonham Carter. Director Aneil Karia is also competing for breakthrough talent, Joe Anderson is up for photography and lighting: fiction, and Des Hamilton is also up for scripted casting.

The streamer’s hit thriller “Giri/Haji” also came out with six nods, while the documentary “Don’t F**k With Cats: Hunting an Internet Killer” came out with two.

Also making the cut is Amazon’s hit TV show “Fleabag,” which snagged six noms of its own. Actress and writer Phoebe Waller-Bridge is being recognized for both talents as she is up for female performance in a comedy program, as well as writer: comedy. Fellow co-star Sian Clifford is also a contender in the female performance in a comedy program category. The show is also up for scripted comedy, Virgin Media’s must-see moment, with Harry Bradbeer nominated for director: fiction and Gary Dolner nominated for editing: fiction.
