This MLB Postseason, Fox Will Be Streaming ALCS in 4K HDR For First Time Ever

Jason Gurwin

After bringing 4K streaming to the Women’s World Cup this summer, and Thursday Night Football, starting with last week’s Philadelphia Eagles vs. Green Bay Packers game — Fox is bringing it to the diamond for the first time. Today, Fox Sports announced that they will deliver the 2019 American League Championship Series in 4K HDR to fans using the Fox Sports and Fox Now apps.

“While FOX Sports takes great pride in being at the forefront of the use of new and ever-changing production technology, it’s always about the game on the field,” said Brad Cheney, FOX Sports VP Field Operations & Engineering. “We want to be right in that sweet spot … the intersection of art and science. The use of technology should always enhance the storytelling, bringing viewers closer than ever to the sports they love.”

Similar to other sports on Fox, fuboTV will also carry the games in 4K directly from their service, but now the ALCS will also be available in the Fox Sports and Fox Now apps. That means that if you are a subscriber of PlayStation Vue, Hulu Live TV, and YouTube TV — you can watch the games live in 4K using your TV Everywhere credentials.

Both apps are available on all major streaming media players including Apple TV, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, Xbox, iOS, Android, and your computer. In order to stream in 4K though, you will need a Apple TV 4K or a Roku device that supports 4K streaming including the latest Roku TVs, Roku Premiere, Roku Streaming Stick+, and Roku Ultra. For the first time, the streaming telecasts will also feature Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound — which will be supported by over 100 microphones around the field.

Additionally, Fox Sports will be using new 8K cameras which will allow them to do ultra zoomed-in shots around the field. That will join additional “Dirt Cams” which will give a snails-eye view around the field, as well as a Virtual Eye 3D rending which can show the flight of balls hit or pitched by players.
