To show support for those protesting the death of George Floyd and to further educate the public on the history and consequences of racism, Tubi has compiled select movies and documentaries that spotlight social injustice.
The AVOD has curated 12 various movies under the umbrella “United Against Inequality” with the hashtag #Solidarity.
They include docs such as “The Untold Story of Emmett Louis Till” and “King: Man of Peace in a Time of War,” as well as the dramas “Fruitvale Station” and “Jasper, Texas.”
In addition, Disney announced it would contribute $5 million to nonprofit organizations fighting for social justice. Some $2 million is earmarked for the NAACP. The company also noted past contributions of $2.5 million to the United Negro College Fund.
Disney CEO Bob Chapek stated it is “critical that we stand together, speak out and do everything in our power to ensure that acts of racism and violence are never tolerated.” ABC News, a Disney subsidiary, aired the special “America in Pain: What Comes Next?” exploring the protests and anger that followed Floyd’s killing.
Netflix CEO Reed Hastings also donated $1 million to the Center for Policy Equity, which tracks racial bias in law enforcement.
Since the killing, there have been protests in cities nationwide demanding police accountability and highlighting the treatment of black Americans. Rep. James Clyburn (D-SC) told CNN the future of U.S. democracy is at a “crossroads.”
