Ever since it was acquired by Viacom in January 2019, Pluto TV has proven to be a great asset for the company as it has grown each quarter since.
The free, ad-supported OTT streaming service was at 12 million users when they became a part of Viacom and has grown to 22 million monthly active users as of Q4 2019. It slightly lags behind fellow competitor, Tubi, which was last reported at 25 million users. However, Pluto TV is projected to reach 30 million users by the end of 2020.
Pluto TV carries a lot of content from Viacom’s expansive and demographic- specific library. Shows from MTV, VH1, Nickelodeon, Noggin, BET and Comedy Central, among others, are available on the platform.
After a merger, which saw the parent company become ViacomCBS, Pluto TV also added content from CBS. In November, the platform added three CBS Interactive channels — ET Live, CBSN New York and CBSN Los Angeles. On January 30, a week after its premiere on CBS All Access, Pluto TV hosted a 24-hour marathon of the first episode of mega-hit show, “Star Trek: Picard” on their Sci-Fi channel (CH 661).
Last July, Pluto TV announced the launch of Pluto TV Latino, a new category on the platform, featuring 11 linear Spanish and Portuguese-language channels. Pluto TV Latino was the first offering of its kind on a major free, ad-supported OTT service. Across the 11 channels, Pluto TV Latino offers movies, comedy, music, true crime, reality, sports and telenovelas. Programming is in native Spanish-speaking as well as dubbed versions.
Though the service debuted in the U.S., it is expected to launch in Latin America at the end of March. Pluto TV Latino will offer content in Spanish and Portuguese and will launch with 24 channels, with the goal to get to 100 by end of the year. The company also revealed they will launch Pluto TV Brazil at the end of 2020.
Pluto TV is also expanding globally. The company announced a partnership with Vidaa International, a subsidiary of Hisense, which will see Pluto TV on Vidaa’s platform in the U.S., Europe and Latin America. In addition, starting this spring, all Hisese televisions sold in the U.S. and Mexico will feature a branded Pluto TV Button that sends viewers to the Vidaa platform.
Pluto TV holds 250-plus channels from 170-plus content partners and is available on a wide array of devices, including Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Android TV, Chromecast, PS4, iOS, Android and your computer.
