YouTube Doubles Program Launches in 2020

YouTube has shifted its content strategy: It has 100-plus original projects scheduled for 2020, doubling its 2019 output. That’s according to Susanne Daniels, global director of original content for YouTube, speaking at the TCA tour, reports Adweek.

An interesting twist: Documentaries will be a strong element in this year’s programs.

Several docs on the upcoming slate includes a 10-part doc on singer Justin Bieber on Jan. 27. Also on board is “Creators for Change,” a four-part series produce by Vox Media Studios. Michelle Obama discusses the global education of teen girls in the first episode. YouTube Originals has partnered with the Obama Foundation’s Girls Opportunity Alliance, which promotes education for adolescent girls worldwide.

In addition, a six-part series with gymnasts is set to premiere in Tokyo before the 2020 Summer Olympics.

YouTube Originals will continue to program live events. Illusionist David Blaine will host a live magic event, while makeup artist James Charles, who claims 10 million followers on YouTube and has his own cosmetics brand, will moderate a reality contest.

“From learning to personal content to music events, we focus on getting the most out of what YouTube has to offer worldwide,” says Daniels.

The streamer offers two viewing models: ad-supported (free) and ad-free (subscription).
