Amazon Prime Video Coming to Facebook Portal, Co-Viewing to Facebook Messenger

Facebook, in the first day of F8, the company’s annual conference about the future of technology, announced that it’s aiming towards becoming more of a privacy-focused platform, hoping to give users spaces where they can express themselves freely and still feel connected to the people and communities they enjoy most. Included in that is how Facebook will make changes to certain aspects of the app, specifically outlining the changes to both Messenger and Portal.

In terms of what Facebook plans with Messenger, the company said that the communication tool will now allow users to discover and watch videos from Facebook together in real time. That means people will be able to seamlessly share a video from the Facebook app on Messenger and invite others to watch together while messaging or on a video chat.

Whether that’s a favorite show, funny clip or home movie, Facebook is currently testing the update, with hopes to roll it out later this year. Streaming service Philo has been testing a similar feature as part of their Live TV Streaming Service.

As for the updates to Portal, this summer Facebook will be adding improvements for streamers. Through a collaboration with Amazon, will now add more visual features and Alexa skills to Portal, including Flash Briefings, smart home control and the Amazon Prime Video app later this year. The new changes to Portal come after Facebook had already added YouTube support last fall.

Additionally, users will also be able to use Facebook Live on Portal, meaning they can broadcast their own live shows to their friends of those in Facebook Groups directly from the device. Using the built-in AI camera, the device will follow you so you don’t need a cameraman.
