AT&T Plans to Launch AT&T TV, Streaming Version of DirecTV, Nationwide in February 2020

While speaking at Barclays Global TMT Conference, AT&T Communications CEO Jeff McElfresh shared that AT&T TV, the streaming version of DirecTV, will launch nationally in February 2020, as first reported by FierceVideo.

The company launched in 10 test markets like Orange County, CA and West Palm Beach, FL in August, and expanded to four additional markets including New York City in November. The service is powered by their custom Android TV streaming media player, which they had previously been testing with AT&T TV NOW.

Unlike AT&T TV NOW, the service includes a 500 Hour DVR (vs. 20 Hours) and 3 simultaneous streams (vs. 2 streams). While the DVR is much larger than that on AT&T TV NOW, the recording will only last for 90 days. Since the service will include a bigger bundle of channels, there will be over 55,000 on-demand titles at launch. You will also able to install other apps from Google Play like Netflix and Pandora and use it on the streaming box.

The service has four plans which start at $59.99 with a two-year contract:

  • Entertainment: $59.99 w/ 70 channels
  • Choice: $64.99 w/ 90 channels
  • Xtra: $74.99 w/ 120 channels
  • Ultimate: $79.99 w/ 125 channels

But just like when you sign-up for Cable or Satellite, those prices are a bit misleading because unlike Live TV Streaming Services, these are just introductory prices and don’t include taxes and fees.

As it stands, pricing is set to increase after the first year for each package. The Entertainment and Choice packages, which are currently going for $59.99/mo. and $64.99/mo. will add on prevailing rates of $93 and $110 per month, respectively. The XTRA and Ultimate packages, which are currently $74.99 and $79.99 will also take on prevailing rates of $124 and $135 per month after the first year.

Unlike DIRECTV though, they don’t have are missing a number of local channels and Regional Sports Networks. In one of their launch markets, Odessa, TX — they offer NBC (KWES), CBS (KOSA), & FOX (KPEJ), but not The CW (KCWO), MyNetworkTV, Univision (KUPB), or Independents (KWWT, KMLM) — which are available on DIRECTV.

Given that there are cheaper options from Live TV Streaming Services, unless something radically changes by February, it’s not exactly clear who these plans are designed for.
