The Iowa caucuses are among the most important votes in the election cycle as they could potentially end a candidate’s campaign if they do not get enough votes. According to NBC, most Democratic caucus locations require presidential hopefuls to garner at 15 percent of attendees’ votes in order to achieve viability. “If that threshold isn’t met, a candidate’s supporters must realign to a different viable candidate or join with other nonviable groups to form a viable preference group. (One of those preference groups could be “uncommitted.”) And the number of delegates awarded at each caucus site is determined by a mathematical formula,” NBC stated.
According to the CBS News Battleground Tracker, Bernie Sanders and Joe Biden are approximately neck and neck with 25 percent each, Pete Buttigieg is not too far behind, coming in at 21 percent, while Elizabeth Warren is at 16 percent, although she still has a chance to get some delegates on her team. Amy Klobuchar is at 5 percent in CBS news’ baseline estimate, while the rest of the candidates come under 5 percent.
NBC reports that Iowa Democrats are expecting a turnout larger than the 240,000 people who showed up and participated in the caucuses back in 2008. The network reports, “There are a total of 1,679 precincts that will meet to caucus. The Democratic Party in Iowa will also hold a number of ‘satellite’ caucuses (60 in state, 24 out of state and three international — in Tbilisi, Georgia; Glasgow, Scotland; and Paris, France) for those who are unable to travel to a caucus location.”
