Fresh off his big wins on Super Tuesday last week, former Vice President Joe Biden is coming into today’s primaries as the top contender over Sen. Bernie Sanders. Though Sen. Sanders trails with 573 delegates to Biden’s 664, all is not lost. If he can garner the 125 delegates in Michigan, he gets back on top. To become the Democratic nominee, candidates must earn 1,991 delegates, according to USA Today.
Today’s primaries offer 352 delegates with Washington coming in second after Michigan with 89, Missouri with 68, Mississippi with 36, Idaho has 20 and North Dakota rounds out the states with 14.
In order to win Michigan, there are a few factors to consider, besides the fact that the state has the most delegates. For one, Sen. Sanders goes in knowing he won there during the 2016 election. However, Biden has had some high profile endorsements from the state recently. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, former Gov. Jennifer Granholm and former Sen. Carl Levin have all endorsed Biden, according to USA Today.
The former vice president has also come out victorious in some recent polls. “According to a Detroit News/WDIV-TV poll Feb. 28-March 2, Biden has 29 percent support in the state compared to Sanders at 22.5 percent. Biden also has some momentum after a number of wins on Super Tuesday. But that might not mean much: In 2016, Sanders didn’t lead in any polling against Clinton and went on to win Michigan,” USA Today stated.
