NewsON, Local News Streaming Service, Launches on Apple TV

NewsON, a streaming service for local news content launched today on the Apple TV. The news comes mere weeks after NewsOn announced its launch on Amazon Fire TV and joins other services such as Haystack TV, STIRR, and CBSN in bringing local news to cord-cutters.

The NewsON app provides instant access to both live and on-demand video newscasts including 179 TV stations in 123 U.S. markets representing 13 different station ownership groups. In addition to Apple TV and Fire TV, the app is available for free on Roku, iOS and Android devices — but it is not yet available on Android TV.

Earlier this month, the company announced record-breaking consumer engagement of its app with total OTT viewing time of over 80,000 hours per day, and average session lengths of over one hour each.

It was launched in November 2015 — with support from founding members Cox Media Group, Hearst Television, Media General, Raycom Media, & ABC Owned Television Station Group. Sinclair Broadcast Group announced an investment in news service in January 2016.
