Tiffany Haddish to Executive Produce HBO Max Comedy Based on Comic Aida Rodriquez’s Life
Emmy winner Tiffany Haddish (“Black Mitzvah,” “The Last O.G.”) has signed with HBO Max to executive produce a 30-minute comedy about comedian Aida Rodriquez, reports Deadline.
Rodriquez, an Afro-Latina writer-actress, is best known as a commentator on “The Young Turks.” She first gained visibility as a contestant on the eight season of “Last Comic Standing.” She was also the first Latina to appear in two specials, on HBO and Showtime, in one month.
Haddish has been instrumental in using her clout at Netflix to highlight women comedians, believing the industry often excludes women, people of color and LGBTQ performers. Rodriquez was one of six female comics on “Tiffany Haddish Presents: They Ready!”
The Rodriguez comedy, currently in development, is co-written by Rodriguez, Chris Case (“Legit,” Eddie Murphy’s “Soul Soul Soul”) and Nastraran Dibai (“Resident Alien,” “Dear White People”). The sitcom mirrors her struggles to start a career and raise two teens, as well as her tough childhood in Miami.
On-screen, Haddish will be seen next in Netflix’s series “Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker” and the movie “Bad Trip.”
HBO Max recently announced Rosario Dawson (“Jane the Virgin,” “Zombieland: Double Tap”) will star in “DMZ,” based on the DC comic-book series.
The streamer, charging $15/month, debuts in May. WarnerMedia says it expects HBO Max to have 10,000 hours of premium video content at launch.
